Job Purpose |
The research assistants are primarily responsible for collecting field data and transcribing their interviews. They will have direct contact with respondents and have a great bearing on the quality of data collected and ultimately on the quality of data output. |
Responsibilities |
The position holders shall be responsible for;
Fieldwork preparation duties
- Attend a three days training workshop for research assistants
- Receive data collection tools (questionnaires) and equipment.
- Conduct piloting of the data collection tools.
Fieldwork and data collection
- Schedule time(s) with participants to complete the assessment tools
- Respond to questions the participants may have about the assessment
- Perform day-to-day data collection activities: travels to districts, health facilities, and key personnel offices to collect data
- Review and edit data to ensure completeness and accuracy of information
- Receive data queries from the Data Manager and resolve them or clarify data collected if needed
- Report/send summary data collected to the Principal Investigator at the end of each day
- Comply with the requirements necessary for conducting a successful participant interview.
- Conduct Key Informant Interviews and Focus Group Discussions
After field visits
- Ensure that all questionnaires are complete, and all data captured is kept secure at all times
- Attend daily meetings with the Principal Investigators after fieldwork to discuss any challenges, solutions, and experiences.
- Transcribe the interviews that they have collected
Financial Accountability
- Keep all participant signature forms and a detailed account of spending while in the field(where applicable).

Required qualification |
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Statistics, Law or equivalent
- A certificate or training in qualitative and/or quantitative research is an added advantage
- Previous experience with data collection and qualitative transcribing will be an added advantage
- Minimum of two (02) years relevant working experience as a research assistant or related position
- Previous experience with human rights related study is an added advantage

- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, written and verbal
- Computer literate
- Ability to produce concise, informative, and appropriate written documentation
- Ability to work independently as well as an effective team player
- Experience working in rural settings for extended periods of time
- Ability to speak native languages in the area (Luganda, Runyankole, Acholi, Lugbara, Madi, and Gishu English).
