The State of Food and Agriculture in Uganda Since Independence

Ahead of the World Food Day Celebrations, Dr. David Kabanda the Executive Director Center for Food and Adequate Living Rights- CEFROHT was hosted at NTV where he informed the general public that discussions on food security do not rotate only around Karamoja. He also said that according to the census data provided, 18.5 million Ugandans are suffering from acute food insecurity which is a serious cause for concern and if people do not know where their next meal will come from, they can become desperate enough to take drastic actions.

“Uganda is ranked third globally in potential to supply organic food to the world market. Considering the trillions of dollars in the food and agriculture subsector, this presents an immense opportunity. Therefore, the government to embrace agroecology to promote our food products and other agricultural goods.” Dr. Kabanda said. The sector that is critically important to the country (agriculture) has not received the direction it needs because Ugandans are spending 54% of their income on food, indicating that people are no longer relying solely on their gardens to eat; instead, they are increasingly dependent on the market.
