There have been Multi-stakeholders engagements through the Advocacy Working Group (AWG) to support regulatory and fiscal measures that promote healthy diets and physical activity. During the quarter there has been a resumption of human rights discussions and meetings for the law on food and nutrition between the Ministry of Health, Office of the Prime Minister, National Drug Authority, Uganda National Bureau of Standards, Uganda Communications Commission and CSOs under the AWG. There is now strengthened joint commitment and support for regulatory and fiscal measures for healthy diets and prevention of NCDs as Commissioners for NCDs, the Assistant Commissioner for Nutrition in the Ministry and ministry of Education, Office of the Prime Minister and Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development discussed the need to promote healthy diets and physical activity as a way through which the rising cases of NCDs can be curbed.
CEFROHT through the AWG met with several stakeholders including the Director of Public Health at the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) office for which issues on the promotion of physical activity in the city Centre and issues related to marketing of foods and non-alcoholic beverages to children within and around schools that are located within the city Centre were discussed, (ii) the Uganda Communications Commission Head of Multimedia and Content. The meeting discussed issues on the restriction of marketing of foods and non-alcoholic beverages to children, (iii) research analyst in the Economic Policy Research Centre (EPRC). The meeting discussed the possibilities to share evidence from the research to assist CEFROHT in its advocacy work towards the promotion of healthy food environments, (iv) the Office of the Prime Minister for which issues policy reforms on food and nutrition as well as physical activity were discussed, (v) Ministry of Education and sports for which issues of physical activity and marketing of foods and non-alcoholic beverages in and around schools were discussed and (vi) Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development Permanent Secretary and the Commissioner in charge of Community Development and Literacy, and the Children Authority. Issues to the protection of children from unhealthy foods and sugar-sweetened beverages were discussed. (Vii) the Uganda Law Reform Commission in which issues concerning the revision of laws on food, nutrition and health were discussed and agreed to work together with CEFROHT and the line Ministries to revise or formulate the necessary laws that promote healthy diets and physical activity. (viii) Ministry of Trade Senior Economic Analyst and the Commissioners in charge of Internal and External Trade for which issues of fiscal policy to diets were discussed, among others.
